Rousing FT course in Finland

HUMAK’s training course was a real success!  It was held at the end of September at HUMAK’s Jyväskylä campus with 27 participants. Most of them were HUMAK´s adult students who are studying cultural management or NGO and youth work besides their own work. Students represented more than 20 different organizations around Finland.  All participants had a common interest in the FT method as a tool of guidance or as a dramatic art form.

Forumplay in Jyväskylä, Finland

After warm up games and value exercises it was time to act. In small groups participants planned short forum plays. Dilemmas and topics were from their daily work life. Two groups worked on the topic of an indecisive boss, which made employees confused. One group took up a scenario when a caregiver of a disabled person was exhausted and did not have power to ask help.  A forth group handled a dilemma in a youth club: a youth worker left youngsters alone and they had a little fight. Afterwards she blamed the wrong person for it.

The training participants were very impressed with the method. Nina Juurimaa and Johanna Mäkinen said that forum plays were a splendid experiment. According to them the best thing was that all participants joined in the plays and games and therefore the experiment was even more expressive.

Annamari Maukonen, lecturer at HUMAK, also took part in the course. She was surprised how effective a method Forum Theatre is. ”Maybe we could also do some FT exercises in our own work society! It might help to make visible our different roles, expectations and relationships even though we don´t have any special problems between colleagues.”

After the course most of the participants have planned how they could use FT as a part of their work.  Maria Puranen, youth worker from city of Joensuu, has organized already a theatre event for 11-13 year old pupils. FT was one method among others at her event.

Some of the participants were interested in having a follow-up course. A two day course was obviously too short to introduce the whole method. Some of the participants will organize their own FT courses including Sanna Rauhala, a coordinator of a day care centre in Muurame municipality, who will organize a special course for the teachers and kindergarten teachers in December.  This is a really good way to spread new learning to colleagues.
